On-going mindfulness-based supervision is an important part of the good practice guidelines for teachers of mindfulness-based courses.
If you wish to train to be a mindfulness teacher, first you must take part in an 8 week mindfulness course run by a teacher listed on the UK Network of Mindfulness-Based Teacher Trainers.
After establishing your own practice for at least 6 months to a year, you can apply to train to teach with a variety of mindfulness-based teacher training organisations.
The most recognised and researched courses for teaching mindfulness to adults are the 8 week mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) or mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT). It is always best to use those training organisations listed on the UK Network to train to teach these well-known courses.
Bangor, Oxford, Aberdeen and Exeter Universities all offer extensive training from level 1 teaching to Masters level. Or you can follow a Professional Pathway route through UK Mindfulness Network, which is affiliated and used by these organisations.
If you wish to train to teach light touch, shorter work or school-based mindfulness courses, there are specific organisations offering these which don’t require such long and extensive training (the Masters or Professional Pathway routes normally take upwards of 4 years).
Whatever route you choose to take, it is important to have mindfulness supervision on a regular basis to fully embody and reflect on your own work and practice. Regular supervision is a pre-requisite for being accepted on the UK Mindfulness listings for mindfulness teachers and trainers.

Also unique to mindfulness supervision is that the session itself is imbued with mindfulness in terms of practice, embodied presence and compassion. The sessions may include live, on-the-spot teaching practice and feedback, inquiry around issues arising in your teaching, discussion based on videoed sessions, discussion about your personal meditation practice and/or some periods of meditation.

Helen has completed a Masters in Education and followed the Professional Pathway with Bangor University Centre for Mindfulness, Research and Practice.
She has a particular interest in supporting mindfulness teachers and trainee teachers who have a background in education and training or who work with young people, children and families. She is also happy to support people who would like to take mindfulness into the workplace as she has experience of running work-based mindfulness courses, as well as those people wishing to teach MBSR courses for the general public.
She has undertaken mindfulness supervision training with Bangor University CMRP as well as possessing a post-graduate diploma in mentoring.
These qualifications are supported by her work as a trainer for several mindfulness educational organisations with courses aimed at primary, secondary and educational staff (Mindfulness in Schools Project and The Present courses) and over 25 years’ teaching and training experience in colleges, schools and in the community to draw on.
Her intention has always been the same; to enable everyone to find their unique path in life in a way that allows them to enjoy the journey.
